Your home island is where the majority of the game and basic game mechanics happen.
On your home island there are a number of “main mechanics" that are the “Core” of Sunflower Land's game play loop. (a full list of game mechanic pages can be seen here)
It's important to have a firm grasp of these core mechanics in order to progress yourself in Sunflower Land.
You start out with access to some buildings like; the House, Firepit, and Blacksmith. But other buildings you will need to build, and others you will need to “prestige your island” to gain access to.
Leveling up is extremely important, maybe even the MOST important part of Sunflower Land.
Use your cooking buildings to make food from the plants your grow, and the animals you keep. Eat that food by clicking on your bumpkin (in front of your house) and then selecting the food you wish to eat. With each food you eat you gain XP. With enough XP you will level up.
Leveling up will gain you access to more Features and unlock further Expansions for your island.
Expansions are an the only way to make your Island bigger, but they also come with some nice additions to your island.

Each island is bigger then the last, and will therefore require more expansions (and more resources) to get to full size.
Once your island is at its full size, you're ready to Upgrade your island!
There are several Islands that you will prestige through in your Sunflower Land Career. And each comes with special things that you couldn't access on the islands before it.
Upgrading to the Best Island, in most cases, is the only way to ensure you can be “competitive” in the chapter race.
